Technology Safety Resources for Parents/Guardians

Technology is a wonderful resource for today's student.   Children and teens have 24/7 access to information, images, videos, games, and communication tools.   Unfortunately, this also exposes them to certain risks.  We recommend the following links to parents to assist them in educating themselves on what these risks are and guide them in teaching their children how to safely utilize the internet at home.

Cell Phones

My Mobile Watchdog

My Mobile Watchdog monitors your child's cell phone use and instantly alerts you if he or she receives unapproved email, text messages or phone calls. The My Mobile Watchdog system consists of two parts: software installed on the child’s phone, and a web page for parents to view their child's activity and control functionality. Information edited on the web page syncs with the child’s phone instantly in the background, and alerts of unauthorized activities (including a copy of the actual text, photo or unauthorized and/or unknown phone number in question) are sent directly to the parent’s phone in real time. My Mobile Watchdog works on all approved networks and devices.

Cell Phone Safety

If cell phones played a limited role in society there would be no debating their safety. Wireless communication is packaged into hip, little slide and flip phones that defy location. Talk when and where you want, take business on the road and enjoy a growing range of extra features that deliver music, video, messaging and Internet capabilities.

Wired Safety – Cell Phones

Using a cell phone to send and receive text messages and/or images, is very similar to using e-mail or instant messaging and some of the same safety rules apply. You cell (mobile) phone can be a direct link between you and spammers, scammers, identity thieves, online predators and cyberbullies. On this page you will find some basic tips on cell (mobile) phone safety.

Gaming and Media

 Common Sense Media

Common Sense Media is dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology.
We exist because our nation's children spend more time with media and digital activities than they do with their families or in school, which profoundly impacts their social, emotional, and physical development . As a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization, we provide trustworthy information and tools, as well as an independent forum, so that families can have a choice and a voice about the media they consume.

Wired Safety – Online Gaming

Computer gaming has changed in recent years. It’s gone from a one-to-one gaming experience (you against the computer or video game) to a multiple player experience (when you had more than one joy stick and a connector). But with the advent of interactive Internet gaming with unlimited players from around the world and, in some cases, voice chat capabilities, the gaming experience has been revolutionized.  You can help keep your child's gaming experiences safe, age-appropriate, friendly, fun, and even educational.  The key is to educate yourself -- about the gaming community, game ratings, and how to use the privacy and safety tools built into the games.  Also learn the difference between online gaming and gambling, and teach your kids the difference, too.

GetGameSmart

As leaders in the video game industry, it's Microsoft's goal to provide parents with tools and resources to manage their children's gaming and entertainment experiences so that they can play in safer, healthy and more balanced ways.
Microsoft is proud to have led the effort to create and build in safety measures that enable parents to choose the right games, content and online access settings for their families.
