The State of Pennsylvania administers a property tax/rent rebate program. Under certain circumstances, senior citizens may qualify for assistance in paying their school district real estate tax. We encourage those residents to contact the Office of Aging (717-299-7979) or the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue for more information. Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their property taxes or rent paid during the calendar year.
The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities. The household eligibility income limit is $35,000, excluding half of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits. Income eligibility requirements for renters remains at $15,000.
Property tax/rent rebate claim forms (PA-1000) are available through the department’s Web site at www.revenue.state.pa.us. Forms and assistance also are available at the department’s district offices (listed in the government section of local telephone directories), local area agencies on aging, senior centers and state legislators’ offices.
Citizens may sign up to receive the form when it is available by calling 1-800-222-9190 or visiting www.papropertytaxrelief.com
